What the heck, is there nowhere else in the country to go for a walk? Why did Mother taking us to Labrador Boardwalk AGAIN!?

She was trying to find a way to get to that little spit of land she saw from the boardwalk. Well she found it and it’s across the bridge at the Marina @ Keppel Bay. It’s nice and green and quiet! We got to wander around on a long leash! And we met alot of nice people including this group of women and their kids – they loved ME!

Yea you also sucked up to the two girls who were jogging. *rolls eyes* Good thing Mother scheduled a massage for us after the 2 hour walk with Pawsitive Sensations! Auntie Z found that my mid back and right hind leg was ache-y!

She found my upper back sore! And said I have a mild sprain in the right front leg! Mummy thinks that it must be all that running around in the mud at the Dogtravaganza event on Saturday. Not good for our muscles!

Romeo & I made a new friend!! Her name is DONUT! She’s super cute and only 3 months old! That’s her picture on the right!

Yes, sadly too young for me. Bah.

*rolls eyes* Anyway, mumsy was saying that Donut’s mum is thinking of feeding her raw and didn’t know where to start so mumskin said she’d show her in pictures and video how she used to feed me as a puppy! I used to swallow without chewing coz I just want to get it in my stomach FAST.

That’s just coz you’re a greedy piglet. We were more than happy to assist Mother in this of course. Thanks to the demo, we had an extra meal!!!! *barks for joy* Here is a pictorial guide on how Mother feeds raw to a pig.. I mean, pup.

NOTE: The following applies to the INITIAL stages of raw feeding. Once the poop is nice and firm, and the dog is good and happily transitioned to raw for a week, 2 weeks or even a month, you will need to change the diet slightly. Will do up a post on that someday soon!

STEP 1

Buy chicken.

Here we have chicken breasts with bone-in on the left and chicken wings on the right. There is also a packet of mince chicken but SOMEONE forgot to take pictures of it.

STEP 2

Cut chicken.

This only applies to chicken breasts NOT chicken wings. Dogs need to chew their food especially when there are bones. If you cut the bones too small, they become a choking hazard. The dog will think, oh why don’t I just TRY swallowing! Larger pieces of bone on the other hand encourage chewing instead of swallowing. The dog will think, damnit mother! *crunch chomp*

In the middle picture, you will see that the chicken breast has been cut into 2 lengthwise, then each half is cut into 3 (almost) equal pieces. That is the absolute smallest you should cut the breast. Anything smaller and the bones will be tiny. If people with bigger dogs are reading this, depending on the size, it may not be advisable to cut the halves at all. The instructions on cutting here apply to small sheltie puppy sized dogs.

Cut of skin and yellow fats as seen in the last picture above. Fats and skin tend to cause a dog to have runny poop especially when it is just starting out on raw. If you remove them, you remove the risk of that happening when you transition a dog to raw food. As it is, transitioning to raw food can give the runs, so let’s help the dog out by making it as easy on the stomach as possible. Once the dog is used to raw food, you can give skin and fat. Fat and skin IS important in a diet but not too much or your dog will be pudgy.

Next, make cuts into the MEAT ONLY on the breast. See video below. The idea is NOT to cut the meat off but just to create little “ribbons” of meat sticking out off the bone. This usually makes it easier for pups to eat. They can grab onto a “meat ribbon” easily and pull and chew it off. When they are used to eating raw, you may not need to do this at all. Just give the piece to them and they’ll rip it to shreds themselves!

Chicken and mince

For chicken wings, cut the fatty bits off the stubby joint (see middle picture below; end result is last picture on the right) and prepare some mince meat to top up if necessary to desired weight. You may also need to top up a chicken breast piece with some mince too if the weight of the breast meat is not enough to make up the desired weight.

Cutting off the fatty bits

End product

STEP 3

Feed the dog!

See video below. For dogs that don’t chew and who like to swallow things hold, it is important to teach the dog that is is necessary to chomp on its meal. You can do this by holding on to the meat you are feeding. Be careful where you put your fingers though!! Hungry excited dogs bite HARD. Holding on to the meat means the dog can’t take the whole piece in its mouth and swallow. Notice also the hand positioning – some dogs like to chew on the right more than the left, and some more on the left than the right. It is best to angle the food on both sides to help the dog learn to chew on both sides (so that you don’t get nice white teeth on one side only!).

Keep repeating this handfeeding process until you feel you can let go and the dog will still chew. This highlights again the necessity for the meats to be chunky and big and NOT bite sized and swallow-able.

The guide above is only for starters and for transitions. Once the dog is ok with raw, fully transitioned and with nice firm poop, then we move on to the proper way to rawfeed. That’s a post for another day!

Happy raw feeding!

They are made of a combination of liver, kidneys (from pig, chicken or lamb), egg (with shell), rolled oats, flaxseed, flour, seameal powder and garlic. Blend together (it will look and smell gross at this point, pourable but not too thin or thick either), spread onto a large pan (Mother makes 2 different batches using different organs and puts them on the same tray), then bake until cooked through (about 15 mins). Cool and slice into strips then pack them into airtight containers and freeze!

Over the weekend, my pals Ruthie, Reyla, Enzo & Wally celebrated their first birthday at K9 Kulture! We had a fabulous time of course. Me especially so! I was like a moth to Ruthie’s flame. Mother kept slapping her hand to her forehead when I chased her down and tried to show her my moves. She mumbled something about it being a good thing Ruthie wore some pants but not that I knew how to do it anyway. It? What’s It?

Here are pictures from that day!

Mother decided to buy a whole duck from the market on Sunday. She got a big bag of hearts, livers and gizzards from 8 ducks for free! She says she’s so going back to this butcher. Instead of having to pay for

livers and other “spare parts”, she can get it for free! Here was my dinner that night. Not for the faint hearted. I’ve decided I don’t like duck as much as other meats tho’. It doesn’t seem to have any smell!

Mother told me that after she had chopped off the duck’s head, neck and a wing, it quacked. She and Auntie M, our helper stopped and Auntie M asked “Did you hear that?” And Mother was like.. “YEA! FREAKY!” So apparently this duck’s soul is still flying around. Either that or Mother has gone a little quacky!

Sunday when there are alot of people and dogs all around! Mother put my on a long leash and let me run around. I showed her tho’! I followed wherever she went and listened to her directions and she rewarded me by running through the fields! I love running! I don’t think Mother does tho’. She says she’s allergic to running – her thighs itch and all that.
